Alt. Summit 2017
So this past week I spent it in the warm, desert sunshine of Palm Springs for the 2017 Alt Summit at The Saguaro with my friends Lindsay of Northern Daisy & Morgan of Morgan Chantelle Photography. It was the perfect mix of vacation and work, and right now I would do anything to feel the warm sunshine -- I was not ready to come back to the cold & rainy weather in Northern California.
We started off the day with check-in and two Early Bird sessions after some sightseeing around town (stay tuned for a Palm Springs blog post!). The first session I attended was Story Based Analytics with Camille Whiting of Friday We're In Love. Coming from a social media background, analytics never sound fun -- like ever. So it was refreshing to hear her take on it and walk away feeling super pumped to check my Google Analytics! Nerd Alert.
For the second session, I attended Audrey Wagner King of French Knot Studios discussion for getting published on blogs. Which was followed by the Cocktail Party that was poolside at The Saguaro. Everyone brought out their shiny and most sparkly outfits for the theme, Glow. There was a photo booth and Alaska Air passed out these darling welcome gifts (see above) filled with my favorites -- champagne & macarons!
Waking up to this hangover kit by FreshBooks was AMAZING! I love well designed packages and gifts (it's one of my love languages) so I was super pumped to open our door to this.
For my first session I attended the keynote where I got to hear how Jihan Zencirli of Geronimo Balloons fell in love with her internet troll. Well first off, she started off with a big bang -- literally! Balloons, confetti, music; she went all out. Followed by Darcy Miller, author of Celebrate Everything, owner of Darcy Miller Designs, & editor at large for Martha Stewart Weddings, who rocked confetti in her hair throughout her whole presentation. I also won a signed copy of her book!
After the break, I headed over to El Jefe (the restaurant inside The Saguaro) to listen to Summer Bellessa & Brooke White of The Girls With Glasses discuss live video for Facebook & Instagram. I loved their unapologetic and high energy that they brought to this session and walked away wanting to jump onto Facebook Live right that second!
During lunch there were Big Boss Entrepreneurs hanging out by vintage cars, there to chat with attendees and show their product. I instantly headed over to Miss Jones Baking Co. (I'm a sucker for anything sweet). First things first (channeling my inner Iggy Azalea), their cookies and frosting are not only gluten free and vegan, BUT they taste AMAZING! You heard that right, great tasting GF & Vegan sweets and they're available at your local Safeway and Whole Foods for us Northern Californians. Oh, and they're based out of Emeryville in the Bay!
Following lunch I attended the Social Media Strength session with Tori Tait of Thoughtfully Simple & The Grommet discussing the Power of Pinterest, and Nanette Wong covering how to SLAY on Instagram. I ended the first full day with the final Keynote with Susan Petersen of Freshly Picked and Alison Faulkner of The Alison Show (who ended her presentation with a dance party, naturally).
I started day three attending Megan Tsang's Photo Editing workshop, which she openly admitted to me that I may be a bit advanced for that class. I didn't care because 1. I LOVE learning about other individual's photo editing workflows (NERD ALERT) and 2. I just wanted to meet a fellow wedding photographer that I had admired their work from afar for awhile now. Well, goals accomplished and I loved how she was able to go around and answer people's questions individually as well. This girl really loves to edit photos -- she said she edits on average about 200 weddings per year. Holy cow!
Following my first workshop, Lindsay and I joined in on Nycia Emerson of Inspired Events and Designs Tablescaping and Styling Workshop where we got to play with props and design our own little tablescape.
This day was all about tours and the three of us signed up for Palm Springs Modern Tours with Robert Imber. First stop was the famous pink door where we got out to take pictures. This was followed by the history of the homes and we even saw gem's like Leo's Palm Springs home and the house from Ocean's Eleven (see above)! It was SO amazing to see the different styles of homes throughout Palm Springs and to learn a little bit behind them. Also, palm trees against the snow capped mountains was such a unique sight to see!
1. Analytics can be fun!
2. Follow blog submission guidelines!
3. Be open to criticism -- it can help you better your process, life, business, etc.
4. DIT -- do it together and always, lots of confetti!
5. Ignore the haters (comments) on LIVE video (and in life) and 20 minutes is optimal for Facebook Live.
6. Try Pinterest ads & it's okay to post more than once at the same time -- they've got their algorithm down!
7. Be consistent on Instagram (this hit me like a big DUH).
8. When in doubt, DANCE! And never be the party pooper at your own party.
9. Create a custom preset to keep your edits consistent.
10. Have fun!
11. Niches are great and all, but why limit yourself?
12. Never limit your creativity.
13. Pink front doors will attract bloggers in flocks.
Stay tuned for my Palm Springs recap!
