Our Wedding Day
Well, it took me almost an entire year to write this, including one failed attempt where all my work disappeared and I had to start this over from scratch. Regardless, I cannot think of a better topic to write about the week before our 1 year anniversary.
April Sixteenth, Two-Thousand-Sixteen
I remember waking up that day and being hit with a ball of nerves. It was actually here, our wedding day, something we had been planning for over a year. I had my bridesmaids Kristen & Naysha with me that morning since they had spent the night with me. And on our way to pick up my future sister-in-law, I remember blasting some old mix cd I had in my little Tacoma pick-up -- I distinctly remember The Rock Show by Blink 182 playing. I didn’t want to talk to anyone just yet. I still couldn’t believe the day was here.
The day officially started at my friends Nicole of Studio Twenty-Two, Jodi of CES Weddings & Events, & (at the time) Carey of The Idea Emporium’s office space on Esplanade in Downtown Chico. As soon as we got there, that ball of nerves just disappeared. It may have had to do with the champagne I was served, but regardless I was ready to get ready.
The guys started their day at Bidwell Park Gold Course, where the played 8 holes before they went to get ready at our friends’ Dane & Kristen’s home. I remember Matt ordering this ridiculous pair of golf pants just for that morning.
Before heading off to the ceremony, we all went to Upper Bidwell Park for our first look and some bridal party portraits.
I remember my dad fumbling over his words, accidentally referring to me as “him” and me quickly correcting by stating, “her”. As Matthew held my hands, he kept telling me, “we’ve got this”, and I couldn’t help but hold back from laughing. It felt like eternity standing up there even though it was maybe 10 to 15 minutes. Then the next thing I knew, we were cheersing our guests with glasses of champagne and back down the aisle we went to Don’t Stop Believing by the Vitamin String Quartet.
For future brides-to-be out there: by now, there had been a few hiccups -- I took the wrong transportation to the first look spot, I was suppose to go with the photographers. When at the ceremony & reception location, people kept coming inside the house (where I was hiding) even though they were suppose to be outside. Lastly, our bridal party had already walked down before the photographers were in place and then as my dad & I were waiting to walk down the aisle the last bus arrived. I’m sure Matt was standing down there as the DJ played my song on repeat thinking that I had gotten cold feet. There may have even been other hiccups that I didn’t hear of.
The moral of this story: We still got married and it was still the best day of my life. At that point, there was nothing I could do. So we just rolled with the punches.
We were introduced to our guests for the reception to No Sleep Till Brooklyn, where we promptly took a shot of fireball together and ran in between the rows of tables high-fiving our guests. In fact, we took another shot of fireball before our first dance as well, which we had practiced incorporating during our one dance lesson.
Any chance I had a free moment, I tried to walk around to see how everything turned out. In the end, there were two things I regretted:
1. Not enough cake AND not requesting a large slice to be saved for us post-wedding.
2. Not having enough time to talk with our guests.
Note: I talk a lot at times, so that is probably why that wasn’t accomplished. And Matthew and I are like two separate tumble weeds when it comes to events like this, we divide and conquer -- or more appropriately, randomly move around to where the flow of the event takes us. Randomly bumping into one another along the way.
Hiccups and all, it's still one of my most cherished and favorite days.
A HUGE Thank you to our vendor team for making this day possible!
